Rupture Directivity of the 25 October 2022 Mw 5.1 Alum Rock Earthquake

چکیده

Abstract The 25 October 2022 Mw 5.1 Alum Rock earthquake shows strong evidence for southeast rupture directivity along the central Calaveras fault (CCF), as indicated by observed ground motions and simulated kinematic ruptures. Peak accelerations (PGAs) peak velocities (PGVs) are notably higher to southeast, with an order of magnitude difference stations at same distance but different azimuths. In addition, PGAs lower than that predicted ground-motion models a factor 3 on average in all directions, indicating low stress drop (∼1.57 MPa). Directivity function modeling simulations both indicate propagation velocity between 2.3 2.5 km/s. We suggest southward relatively may be typical M ∼5 earthquakes this portion CCF.

Response of Alum Rock springs to the October 30, 2007 Alum Rock earthquake and implications for the origin of increased discharge after earthquakes

The origins of increased stream flow and spring discharge following earthquakes have been the subject of controversy, in large part because there are many models to explain observations and few measurements suitable for distinguishing between hypotheses. On October 30, 2007 a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred near the Alum Rock springs, California, USA. Within a day we documented a several-fold...

The 25 October 2010 Mentawai tsunami earthquake ( Mw 7 . 8 ) and the tsunami hazard presented by shallow megathrust ruptures

[1] The 25 October 2010 Mentawai, Indonesia earthquake (Mw 7.8) ruptured the shallow portion of the subduction zone seaward of the Mentawai islands, off‐shore of Sumatra, generating 3 to 9 m tsunami run‐up along southwestern coasts of the Pagai Islands that took at least 431 lives. Analyses of teleseismic P, SH and Rayleigh waves for finite‐fault source rupture characteristics indicate ∼90 s ru...

Intraslab rupture triggering megathrust rupture coseismically in the 17 December 2016 Solomon Islands Mw 7.9 earthquake

The 17 December 2016 Solomon Islands earthquake (Mw 7.9) initiated ~103 km deep in the subducting Solomon Sea slab near the junction of the Solomon Islands and New Britain trenches. Most aftershocks are located near the Solomon Islands plate boundary megathrust west of Bougainville, where previous large interplate thrust faulting earthquakes occurred in 1995 (Mw 7.7) and 1971 (Mw 8.0). Teleseis...

Widespread ground motion distribution caused by rupture directivity during the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake

The ground motion and damage caused by the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake can be characterized by their widespread distributions to the east. Evidence from strong ground motions, regional acceleration duration, and teleseismic waveforms indicate that rupture directivity contributed significantly to these distributions. This phenomenon has been thought to occur only if a strike-slip or dip-slip r...

Rupture complexity of the Mw 8.3 sea of okhotsk earthquake: Rapid triggering of complementary earthquakes?

[1] We derive a finite slip model for the 2013Mw 8.3 Sea of Okhotsk Earthquake (Z= 610 km) by inverting calibrated teleseismic P waveforms. The inversion shows that the earthquake ruptured on a 10° dipping rectangular fault zone (140 km× 50 km) and evolved into a sequence of four large sub-events (E1–E4) with an average rupture speed of 4.0 km/s. The rupture process can be divided into two main...
